Popular DIY methods to clear blocked drains

A blocked drain is perhaps the most frequent reason why you have to hire a plumber. Blocked drains are a nuisance for everyone. Other than causing inconvenience, drainage problem is very unhygienic. They are so frequent that you don’t want to call up professionals like us every time you face them. DIYing is quite common for clearing a blocked drain but it is not always effective. If you don’t do it properly you may push the object further, causing a bigger level of blockage. However, here are some safe DIY methods that you may try. We at SPS Plumbing do not guarantee their effectiveness but you may try them.

Pour boiling water down the drain

Most blockages are caused due to grease or food fat. When it is hot, it easily passes through the drain but later solidifies inside, forming lumps. These lumps are the most common reason for blocked drains. Boiling water works best on them. It will be difficult for you to determine if the blockage is due to grease but hot water is not going to do any harm. Hot water will melt the fat and unclog the blocked drain. Light clog will get removed easily but in case the lumps are bigger and harder, you may have to pour boiling water many times. Do not use boiling water if plastic pipes are used in your drain. This method is useful only for drain with metal pipes.

Pour baking soda in the drain

In case boiling water doesn’t work, you can try pouring baking soda. It is stronger than hot water and is safe to use. Pour a cup full of baking powder down the drain followed by 3-4 cups of boiling water. This solution will act as an alkaline and will dissolve the element, especially food particles that are blocking the drainage. It will make the drain slippery, so that the lumped products pass easily. If this doesn’t work, pour ½ cup of baking soda followed by equal amount of white vinegar. Let the solution sit in the drain for a few hours and then try using it to see if the clogs are cleared.

Pour a can of cola in the drain

Surprisingly, cola can also clear off blocked drains. Cola contains phosphoric acid, a chemical that can eat away the blockages. Try this procedure at the night and let the drain rest till the morning. This is also one of the safest DIY techniques for cleaning blocked drains.

If these methods are not able to clear your blocked drain, seek professional help. To know more about our services, get in touch with us at (02) 9072 0760.
